SBYSO Orchestral Residency Program 2025-26

Midori is a world-renowned violin soloist who has performed with orchestras across the globe; she made her debut with the New York Philharmonic at just 11 years old. Midori received an Avery Fisher Prize in 2004 and used her prize monies to found the Orchestra Residencies Program (ORP). The ORP annually selects two youth orchestras from around the country as part of a highly competitive application process. Each residency emphasizes five pillars:

Artistic Excellence, Community Engagement, Leadership & Mentorship, Music Education Advocacy, and Ongoing Impact.
Midori was named a UN Messenger of Peace in 2007; upon receiving this award, the UN recognized Midori as “a master musician, an innovator, and a champion of the developmental potential of children.” SBYSO’s residency with Midori will take place from Feb. 18-22, 2026, and will culminate with Midori performing with both of SBYSO’s ensembles — Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra — on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026.
Midori Headshot

During her time in South Bend, Midori will:

  • Rehearse and perform with both SBYSO ensembles
  • Lead masterclasses and community seminars
  • Visit local schools (public, private, and charter) to inspire hundreds of students
  • Meet with our Board of Directors and community leaders to strengthen arts advocacy
  • Host informal conversations, meals, and social events with students
  • Engage area music educators and private teachers
  • Offer leadership training and mentorship sessions for youth
  • Participate in a community performance of the first movement of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto alongside student soloists
This event is not just for SBYSO — it is a community-wide celebration of music, learning, and connection.
